Introduction to Unconscious Bias and Cultural Humility

This brief course is one of four in a series and provides content and activities addressing the systemic racial/cultural inequities in service delivery/systems, cultural competencies for service delivery, and the integration of reflection and new knowledge into practice for early intervention service providers in California. This course may be completed synchronously, during the first offering, or asynchronously from archived content. Upon completion of the series of courses, participants will be able to:

  • Examine and recognize racial/cultural bias;
  • Identify strategies to understand and address racial/cultural bias;
  • Implement skills to build their own cultural competence; and
  • Integrate culturally competent skills into interactions with families and colleagues.

In this course, participants will reflect on their own cultural background and identity to increase awareness of personal assumptions, values, stereotypes, and biases. The concepts of cultural identity, assumptions, and bias are foundational and will be revisited throughout the series.
